Purpose & objective
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn the basic visual ideas that transform a movie from good to great.
Visual and media literacy are vital skills for the next generation, and this workshop can play a part in helping teachers become more literate in these areas themselves. Teachers can use the skills learned in this workshop to create documentary videos about classes or projects, instruction videos for students, or narrative movies for learning and entertainment. Perhaps more importantly, teachers will leave this workshop with the skills and resources to instruct and assess their students as they create video projects in their classes.
Participants will learn through a mixture of direct instruction from the presenters, small group work to produce videos, and support in those small groups not only from each other, but also the presenters, advanced student guides, and representatives from WeVideo.
This workshop with cover:
1. Cinematography, including shot types and their ideal uses and effects, as well as technical and artistic tips to keep in mind when shooting video.
2. Scripting and storytelling, including three act structure and tips for constructing narratives for both fiction and non-fiction (documentary) videos.
3. Editing, including both artistic and technical techniques. Participants will edit using the WeVideo platform, with representatives from WeVideo on hand to provide support and information.
The workshop will begin with a brief overview of filmmaking skills and artistic techniques (approx. 1 hour). From there, participants will form small groups and begin plotting a short narrative or documentary digital film (approx. 30 minutes).
The groups will shoot their videos in the Convention Center and the surrounding areas of Philadelphia (approx. 2 hours). Each group will be paired with a guide - a student or alumnus(a) from Science Leadership Academy's Rough Cut Productions video program. These local guides will be able to not only help with finding locations in the area but also to contribute videography tips as the groups are shooting their films.
Groups will edit their videos using WeVideo (approx. 2 hours), with the presenters, student guides, and representatives from WeVideo available to provide artistic and technical support. The workshop will conclude with a screening of the completed videos (approx. 30 min).
The value of media production as a tool for increasing digital and media literacy is well documented and supported by scholars and associations like the National Association of Media Literacy Education (NAMLE), Project New Media Literacies (founded by Henry Jenkins), The Media Education Lab (founded by Renee Hobbs), and many others.
