Explore how traditional classrooms and libraries become transformative learning spaces such as learning commons and makerspaces. What needs to shift in our schools to design spaces for innovative learning? We'll present ideas on how to to set up flexible, creative spaces to support learning for and with students and educators.
Purpose & objective
Learning has changed and evolved and so why not our classrooms?
Transformative learning spaces such as learning commons & makerspaces are inspiring a re-mix of design of traditional classrooms & libraries. This presentation introduces participants to the world of learning space design and also what needs to shift in our schools for these changes to succeed. We'll be presenting practical ideas on how to set up flexible, creative spaces to support learning for & with students and educators.
We will show before and after shots of learning spaces to illustrate the choices that educators made in designing their spaces.
We will present tools such as the app Magic Plan to show participants how easy it is to virtually experiment with design ideas.
We will present the scaleable model of Learning Commons Grants that is in its 3rd year of implementation in SurreySchools and also the MakerSpace Project that offers makerspace kits for K-12 in SurreySchools. In our district of 70,000 students, our 123 sites have all received an Innovative Learning Design grant that is fuelled by a variety of inquiry questions about how instructional design, implementation of technology and learning space design impact the learning of our students.
At the end of our presentation, our participants will feel as if this is something that they too can do when they return to set up their learning spaces in the fall. It will be the beginning of embracing a designer mindset.
Content will be presented by an engaging keynote presentation rich with images of learning spaces, ideas and strategies supported by a series of stories of the good, bad and the ugly :) of designing transformational learning spaces
