Purpose and Objectives
We often talk about connected educators, but connecting our students and engaging them in opportunities for Digital Leadership should ultimately be why we connect; to teach our students to be confident problem-solvers and collaborative contributors to a better society. But we cannot be what we cannot see. Participants will learn about remarkable kids engaging in leadership opportunities which leverage technology and social media in positive ways and meaningful ways.
With opportunities for networked collaboration at the fingertips of practically every educator in the world, the potential for connection is limitless. Being connected educators means personalizing our networks and nurturing the bonds that have been created. How can we empower our own students to experience the transformational potential of connections and learning that comes with using technology and social media to explore their passions?
Participants will be guided to start their journeys to inspire students to use social media beyond the social. It will showcase students who are not waiting until tomorrow to demonstrate leadership. It will provide educators with ideas about how to contextualize important digital citizenship lessons while using technology and social media in empowering ways, thus, shifting the fear negative. It will model the use of interactive tools which can easily become tools for global collaboration. All session participants will leave with ready-to-implement ideas and resources which will enable them to connect their students to organizations, to each other, and to the world.

Learning Objectives
Learning Objective 1:
Session participants will gain an understanding of ways to provide students opportunities to use social media to learn & share learning, to address social inequality, and to be a positive influence in the lives of others by learning about students who are doing this already.
Learning Objective 2:
Session participants will discover specific ways incorporate Digital Citizenship lessons in the context of Student Digital Leadership.
Learning Objective 3:
Session participants will discover ways to inspire a shift in mindset when it comes to using social media in school and learn about global projects and opportunities for collaboration which
I will use an interactive, multimedia presentation to engage participants. Inspired discussion and interactive demonstrations will further encourage attendee participation through sharing, conversation, and exploration of topics. weblinks, digital graphics, and video will be used to demonstrate concepts. New digital technologies that allow educators to connect and collaborate will be demonstrated and then attendees will be invited to participate in discussion, sharing, and discovery of global collaborative projects, student leaders, and organizations that promote connected learning and student Digital Leadership.


Each of the following three segments will be treated fairly equally in terms of time.
1. In an age where kids are being asked about their social media profile, how might we rethink how we approach the social media conversation to give students an opportunity to become Digital Leaders. There are students leveraging social media right now to share their learning, to address social inequality and to make a difference in the lives of others. By shining a light on these remarkable students, educators will begin to see what is possible in terms of student Digital Leadership.

2. Beyond Digital Citizenship: Using Mike Ribble’s 9 Elements of Digital Citizenship as a springboard, participants will get concrete examples of how to move beyond Digital Citizenship to having students use social media in the context of powerful lessons which serve to connect students to experts, organizations, and other students.

3. Igniting Student Passions: Participants will learn of opportunities to connect students to meaningful projects which they can begin immediately, using obvious social media tools such as Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and other tools such as Padlet, Dotstorming, and blogging.

Throughout the presentation, participants will be invited to use social media interactively to present their thoughts to the ideas expressed and to pose questions.
