Purpose & objective

The Middle East in Transition is a four- part video conference series that connects students from around the world with experts and activists who can help them better understand political unrest and uprisings in the region. This is an interesting and interactive way for students to explore the root causes of social upheavals in the Middle East and the challenges that surround democracy. It is offered as part of Global Encounters, an international student video conferencing program ( that brings classrooms together to connects student to learn about and discuss pressing global issues and provides them with a platform to work together to create change.


Introduction to TakingITGlobal and The Centre for Global Education - 5 minutes
Exploring reasons why learning about the Middle East is important - 5 minutes
Topics covered during these series - 15 minutes
-violence and nonviolence, both in terms of how we remember the history of these movements, and in the current context of transition in the Middle East
-how art and poetry is used in conflict settings as a means of witnessing conflict experience
-the role of social media in the rise of the Arab Springs
