Join "The Nerdy Teacher," aka Nicholas Provenzano, and maker teacher librarian, aka Colleen Graves, for an interactive session exploring and experimenting with maker and STEAM ideas that will help you explore curriculum connections.

Proposal summary

Purpose & objective

The purpose of the presentation is to expose educators to the world of STEAM and Making. The presentation will allow attendees to see both ideas side by side and understand the different tools available to them to use with students. The presentation will be fun and approachable so newcomers to Making and STEAM can see what is being shared and feel like they can try some of it once they get back to their classroom.


Audience participation is a MUST. Together we will explore connecting authentic classroom experiences with : LEGO tinkering, Raspberry Pi, Makey Makey, littleBits, Scratch Programming,hacking recyclables, 3D Design and Printing, and Soft circuits. Colleen and Nick will bring half-baked prototypes with different Maker and STEAM tools to share curriculum connections with making. Throughout this interactive lecture, the audience will experience STEAM and Maker activities like paper circuits, Makey Makey, Raspberry Pi, coding, and much more! Throughout the experience of tinkering and exploring with "mad maker Nicholas" and the "mad scientist Colleen" the audience will realize the common ground and beautiful blending of STEAM and Maker worlds that is a makerspace. The time will be dictated by the interest and questions from the audience. The session will participant driven and focus on their needs. Participants will shift from tinkering to questioning and finding out how to incorporate all of these activities into their classroom curriculum or library makerspace.
