Hear from a classroom teacher, an educational technology teacher and a library media specialist about how they collaborate to tie together grade level common core curriculum expectations with ISTE and American Association of School Librarians (AASL) standards to further their student's hands on learning (with LEGOs).

Proposal summary

Purpose & objective

The purpose of this presentation is to showcase how multiple adults in a building can collaborate together to enhance learning for their shared students. Participants will listen to a grade three classroom teacher, a k-4 educational technology teacher, and a k-4 media specialist discuss the roles they play as a team to develop and implement instruction. Participants will be given the opportunity to ask questions and begin to plan how to work collaboratively with colleagues during the next school year. Coaches and administrators attending the session will be able to plan how to encourage staff in their buildings to plan and implement instruction in a collaborative method.


Presenter 1 will discuss and address concerns from classroom teachers (gathered from survey data and observational experience) when it comes to integrating technology in the elementary classroom.
The Support Side Presenters 2 and 3 will discuss and address concerns from special area teachers (gathered from survey data and observational experience) when it comes to integrating ISTE and AASL standards in a classroom environment.
Support Materials participants will be given access to questions and templates to help with collaborative planning Walkthrough of Animal Adaptations Example (20 minutes):
All three presenters will speak to their role in an example project integrating CCSS, ISTE, and AASL standards within a third grade curriculum. Participants will be exposed to Google Apps for Education, Coding applications including courses from and Scratch Jr., and Socrative and will walk away with copies of GAFE materials they can use and/or modify to fit their own needs. Student work will also be showcased. Presenters will address any questions/concerns that participants may still have. Participants will be encouraged to share the “one thing” they would like to try this fall when it comes to collaborative planning and/or any of the technology platforms showcased during the session. All three presenters during post presentation format will be available to work with participants on their "one thing" take away for the fall.

Supporting research The Partnership for 21st Century Skills White Paper published in 2007 stresses the importance of interdisciplinary learning for students combined with the 4 C’s of innovation: Critical Thinking, Creativity, Communication and Collaboration. By focusing on these four skills, during through the integration of media and technology as combined with an integrated science unit, students are developing lifelong skills for their future. Although students are already immersed in a technological world, they rarely use technology in a sophisticated manner. Teaching students how to attain information and digital literacies will also help them approach learning the sciences in a way which expands their future innovative capabilities. Teachers must close the gap by exposing students to 21st century learning. This article was published in AMLE magazine back in in March of 2014. It discusses the importance of CCSS with a focus on the middle grades. While our presentation will be primarily focused on elementary grades the idea that the transition to CCSS needed to come from the teachers rings true for us as well. This article supports our triad of work with all of us teaching technology and literacy to further student success. It also showcases that we are not alone in creating our own materials and calibrating our lenses on student expectations and work. It discusses the importance of rethinking the traditional school library media center in order to meet the needs of your patrons. Although our space is a mixture of traditional classroom and library proper, the whole space is utilized by students and staff alike. Table get moved in order to create a larger space for students to sit on the carpet or regrouped for large group work. This article supports the idea that the media center should the center of collaboration and that it should be able to be changed to further support collaboration. It also reimagines the media center as an area for makerspaces, and creative thinking, which again connects with how our library media center has changed over the years.

Kate received her 6th year in Educational Leadership from Central Connecticut State University. She currently holds her certification in School Library Media in the state of Connecticut. Her current role is Educational Technology Teacher for Newington Public Schools (CT). She has over 20 years of experience working with K-8 children in schools, public libraries, and community centers. She was CECA's Elementary Educator Award winner in 2014 and has presented at the state and district levels. Kate is a Facilitator, Google Certified Educator and Trainer.
