Learn how the Monterey Bay Aquarium became the first organization of its size to develop “by teens, for teens” social media accounts. Teens created their own brand and used it to post science and conservation-focused content for their peers.

Proposal summary

Purpose & objective

Participants will learn from students how they developed a brand, identified an audience, selected social media platforms, create conservation-focused social media posts for other teens, and schedule those posts regularly. They'll also learn how experienced teens mentor new teens to keep the program running year after year. Teachers can implement this five-step process in their own schools and classrooms to create student-led social media accounts.

Learning Objectives:
Participants will understand the elements necessary to build a successful teen-run social media program.
Participants will learn how to avoid potential pitfalls when giving teens control over public social media accounts.
Participants will hear how such a program can impact teens, from both evaluation data and teen presenters.

Evidence of Success
Student presenters will guide participants to create their own social media posts, using the process, brand, and filter considerations developed by teens.

Outline

Educators will describe the process used to train teens.

Teens will explain the 5-step process for creating a teen-led social media program. They will describe how they developed a brand, identified an audience, selected social media platforms, create conservation-focused social media posts for other teens, and schedule those posts regularly.

Teens will then share how they train new students. Teens will engage participants in using the guiding documents they developed to each create a social media post.

We will share the evaluation results of the program, highlighting the impact on our teen audience, as well as teens participating in the program.

In closing, educators will highlight the most important pieces of the program. Presenters will offer suggestions for modifying the program to emulate it at other educational organizations and schools.
