Communication skills are fostered through our oral and written directions and materials. How can we model best practices and strategies to set our students up for success? This three-part strategy of chunking info, providing visual cues and revising text/formatting was developed through research-based strategies and honed through student classroom encounters. Find out how to use it in your classroom.

Proposal summary

Purpose & objective

* Become familiar with current research on visual literacy and color psychology as it pertains to designing content for students.
* Explore a variety of examples that showcase best practices for visual literacy and instructional design.
* Utilize visible thinking strategies to reflect on your own practice and process of creating instructional content for students.

I have had several teachers employ this practice in a variety of communication settings (e.g. handouts, resumes, emails, syllabi) with fidelity.


* Presentation and Materials: Presenter will use a multimedia presentation that will be made available to attendees. Links to apps, digital tools, curated research studies and articles will be provided within the deck.
* Presentation and Discussion Activities: The presentation begins with the purpose (3 minutes). We delve into research on visual literacy and color psychology (5 minutes). Then we walk through before and after's of a variety of different documents and handouts and the revision process for each (7 minutes). A discussion activity that uses visible learning strategies is embedded here (5 minutes). After the discussion activity, we walk through the 3 granular step process of how to revise a document (Chunk, Cue, Revise) and delineate the sub steps within each (5 minutes). We reflect on the process and address inquiries and ensure that all participants have access to the multitude of support resources provided (5 minutes).

Supporting research

The best practices that I share have been both grounded in research and personally and professional honed and vetted. I not only practice what I preach with my own examples, but I also offer these resources and tips to our staff and educators across the nation at a variety of conferences and events over the past few years ranging from state events like TCEA and TLA to regional events like iPadpalooza OU.

The beauty of this process is that it is a transferable skill. What participants learn in this session can be relayed to email etiquette, newsletters, syllabi, and even resumes.

Below are some research statistics that address and support the “Methods of Presenting Content” as well as the “Evidence Base”:

* More than 84% of Communication will be Visual by 2018
* Adding color to documents has shown to increase recall of that info by 82%
* People learn more from combinations of visuals and text than from text alone
