Reimagine textbooks with CK-12’s free, customizable, digital FlexBooks in a newly enhanced interactive environment. Start with existing math and science texts — complete with embedded interactives and practice that adapts to the skill level of each student — or build your own from scratch and add in other modalities for learning.

This session aims to address multiple challenges, including accessing resources and tools due to cost and availability, spending time curating and grading work, and finding or creating appropriately challenging and supportive resources and practice for students. CK-12’s free tools and resources are available on any device through a browser. Additionally, there are mobile and tablet apps for Adaptive Practice and FlexBooks® and a tablet app for Simulations.
By the end of this session, participants will be able to use CK-12 to:
* find and assign practice, text, interactives, and other modalities
* begin customizing FlexBooks® and practice to further tailor them to student needs
* plan for future classes using student reports
Participants will use their devices to explore CK-12’s 2.0 FlexBooks®, adaptive practice, and related modalities. This hands-on demonstration will help all participants become familiar with these customizable resources and how they can help improve student learning.
5 mins: Getting Started on CK-12
This session will start with an introduction and opportunity for participants to sign into the CK-12 website.
15 mins: CK-12’s Concept-Based Learning
With the idea of learning particular skills through a variety of ways, CK-12’s core modalities (Reads, Simulations & PLIX Interactives, Adaptive Practice, and more) will be discussed. Users will then have an opportunity to explore these resources.
10 mins: 2.0 FlexBooks®
CK-12’s 2.0 platform brings everything together in a truly interactive environment. Users will have a chance to explore CK-12’s newest math and science texts in this environment.
10 mins: Customizing Content
A brief introduction to customizing FlexBooks® & practice will be given.
15 mins: Assigning Work & Seeing Student Progress
Teachers will see how the CK-12 platform lets them assign work within CK-12 or an integrated Learning Management System. Reports allow them to get meaningful data via their dashboard (or that within an LMS) to then tailor future learning accordingly.
5 mins: Final Wrap-up
This last part will bring it all together and answer any last questions.
The educational resources provided by the CK-12 Foundation are used by schools across the United States and the world. A pilot study involving the Utah State Board of Education and 3,900 public school students found that adoption of the CK-12 Foundation’s open textbooks reduced the cost of education by 50% while maintaining student performance on state standardized tests (read more at the following link: http://www.irrodl.org/index.php/irrodl/article/view/1153/2256). The School Board of Polk County, Florida saved $200,000 on textbook costs through the adoption and customization of the CK-12 Foundation’s mathematical resources.
