Let’s speak students’ language using Snapchat to share excerpts of a book while annotating with #BookSnaps. This fascinating strategy engages both hemispheres of the brain and increases learning retention. Proposal summary

Purpose & objective

Participants will...
1) Explore the use of Snapchat to create #BookSnaps and improve reading comprehension
2.) Connect students with a common language to create a digital visualization (of their imagery) using Bitmojis and emojis
3) Discover the neuroscience behind #BookSnaps as it relates to lodging content into the long-term memory
4) Explore how students/and staff might use #BookSnaps to show their understanding of character conflict and resolution, figurative language, informative text, text features, professional learning, and ultimately providing readers an outlet for sharing their unique personal connections to the text.

Evidence of success might be found online via the hashtag #BookSnaps. Also, on my website: http://www.tarammartin.com/booksnaps-student-examples/

#BookSnaps?
#BookSnaps was birthed during the fall of 2016 as I sought to discover an educational purpose for using the app Snapchat. Since August 2016, school districts and students in eleven different countries are creating #BookSnaps. From 5-year-olds to 80-year-olds, #BookSnaps are providing readers with an outlet to personally express their connections to text using a digital visual representation.

During this engaging session, participants will explore how students and staff can create BookSnap reflections using the Snapchat app to annotate and share their reading connections with the world.

Why Snapchat?
The Snapchat app is a primary form of communication for students of all ages. We will explore the Snapchat app and discuss the digital citizenship and creative communication that is fostered by using social media to increase reading comprehension. Educators will experience the relevance of utilizing the Snapchat app for learning purposes for both student and adult learners.

#BookSnaps and Neuroscience
After I explain the science of why digital imagery increases comprehension, each participant will create #BookSnaps with the same book excerpt. This activity will solidify how when one recreates their visualization digitally the chance of this information lodging in the long-term memory is exponentially increased.

Last, we will upload each BookSnap to a shared Padlet. This eye-opening portion of the session will prove the unique connections to the text and how we must allow students an individualized outlet to "voice their thoughts" and visibly share their thinking.

We will conclude with sharing how we might use #BookSnaps in many contexts. #BookSnaps has many cousins: #MathSnaps, #ScienceSnaps, #VocabSnaps, etc. We will brainstorm with Flipgrid Video Reflections to share our key takeaways from the session.
