Proposal summary

Purpose & objective

The overall goal of this session is to provide ISTE participants with a realistic view of how technology has been a catalyst for school improvement while pondering that question that continues to elude us as to ”why” are we using technology.....and are we really using it or just buying it. Those who attend this session (1) Will be able to discuss the developing use in technology in their schools/districts. (2) Will discuss experiences that they have had in scaling up technologies that drive access and improved learning. (3) Will understand that the “why” is critically important for technology implementations use. (4) Will gain insight into technology use and effectiveness in an award-winning, model tech-using district (5) Will be provided concrete examples of best practices in technology use and analytical analysis

Session will begin with an interactive participant discussion of the effective use of technology in their districts/schools by using Mentimeter, an interactive tool that allows participants to enter feedback and provides an opportunity for the audience to feel more involved and motivated by enabling them to contribute to the presentation. Participants will then be able to view the results live while they are directly using a browser, making sure they are part of the presentation (10 minutes.) Next a very short video clip will be shown that discusses and provides an example of why the "why" is so important in our endeavors, based on the Simon Sinek's concept of "start with the why". A short audience participation/discussion will then ensure (10 minutes). The presenter will then share our district and school best-practice, effective uses of technology and technology-embedded professional development. Additionally, the presenter will share specific examples of technology use and the analysis of the effectiveness of district and school tools (20 minutes). Participants will then participate and discuss in an interactive fashion, again using Mentimeter, the true measure of technology use in schools/districts by how do we critically determine the "value of investment" (VOI) for elevating student learning in innovative ways (10 minutes). The final 10 minutes of the presentation will allow for a question and answer period.
