Drones are becoming more and more widely used especially in ways that teachers and students aren’t exposed to on a regular basis. It is more important now than ever to look at current technologies in new and innovative ways. This session aims to familiarize elementary and middle school teachers along with coaches and library media specialists with how using codable drones as a part of the artistic process creates deep, meaningful learning for their 3-8th grade students. In this session, participants will be exposed to completed student projects in the studio arts, instrumental music and interpretive dance that were all made by computer code-controlled indoor drones. Participants will be introduced to the five steps of computer coding as well as the artistic process steps as they learn what it would be like for them to have their students design and build computer code that will allow the students to dance with drones, paint, and create musical pieces. Attendees will leave this session with a clear picture of how this and similar learning can be replicated in their own classrooms, makerspaces or libraries utilizing the resources shared.
The purpose of this session is to expose classroom teachers, coaches and library media specialists to a novel way of using programmable drone technology in their elementary and middle school learning spaces. Our goals are to give participants the knowledge, resources and confidence to implement drone-created art projects with their students.
Participants to this Poster session will:
Stephanie Williams and Alexandra Konsur both work at the Northeastern Educational Intermediate Unit. Stephanie works with website design and information technology, while Alexandra utilizes her knowledge as a licensed drone pilot and certified educator to create unique learning experiences for the districts they serve. They have had over 300 students complete their drone programs.
