Purpose & objective

Do you wish you could provide more meaningful feedback to students but you don't have the time to write or type out sentence after sentence? Do you have piles of paper assessments with feedback on them just waiting to be handed back to students but don't want to take valuable instructional time to do so? If this describes you, then you need to Feedback Smarter, Not Harder! Formative and summative assessments are an essential tool for determining student learning and needs for refining lessons for all educators, but they must also have value for students. The feedback process helps provide students with the information they need in order to achieve mastery in skills and content. However, this task can be cumbersome for teachers to maintain. The technology tools addressed in this session and the time given for experimentation with those tools will allow educators to provide the necessary feedback and to do so in a more efficient way.

Outline

In "Feedback Smarter, Not Harder: Tools, Extensions, and Add-ons for Providing Feedback to Students", we will learn about and then have time to explore different tech tools that will help you to assess student work, both formative and summative, and provide meaningful and timely feedback so that students can reflect on their learning and achieve mastery. Tools such as Formative, Google Form Quizzes, EdPuzzle, Google Classroom; extensions such as Talk and Comment, Google Keep, Loom Screencasting; add-ons such as Doctopus will all be explored.

This session will be run in a workshop style where the first seven minutes will show tools presented through Pecha Kucha style Slides and the remaining time to play and collaborate. My goal is that by the end of the session, all educators walk away with at least one new tool and a plan for how to implement that tool. I plan to group educators based on the type of tools they are interested in pursuing first. This will ensure that they have access to peers to collaborate with throughout the "play" process.
