Proposal summary

Purpose & objective

Experts agree that research and practices merging from the rapidly developing area of the science of learning are new, essential knowledge. This is particularly the case for instructional leaders who are charged with ensuring their teachers are designing effective learning environments for complex and diverse groups of learners. In the field of education, a distinct shift is occurring to focus on the learner and evidence-based practice. Join us to learn more!
This presentation is designed to share powerful ideas originating in the learning sciences which can be leveraged into highly effective teaching practices. It is organized into four main topics:
1) Overview of the Learning Sciences (remembering what you didn't know you already knew!)
2) Evidence of learning -- how do you know what learners are actually learning?
3) Leveraging the Learning Sciences to Develop Independent Learners (learn about the roles of concepts such as self-regulation, kinds of motivation, measuring growth in multiple ways, student mindsets)
4) Designing opportunities to develop teacher metacognition (applying these tools to build highly effective practices) and professional development in the science of learning

Outline

Our session will model, explain and teach findings from the learning sciences, providing an introduction to our new, ISTE publication. Our goal is a fun, interactive and engaging session which will empower its participants with useful knowledge, skills, and strategies relevant to their own teaching and learning contexts.

To develop educators' knowledge of the Learning Sciences, it's essential that we first identify their existing knowledge and build upon it. Practicing teachers know quite a bit already about the Learning Sciences -- but may not consider that their knowledge fits within this framework.

3. Overview of the Learning Sciences (remembering what you didn't know you already knew!) (10-15 min., Steps 1-3))
4. Level up! 10 key principles from the science of learning for every teacher (15 mins) (backchannel activities)
5. Leveraging the Learning Sciences to develop independent Learners -- worked examples in instructional problem-solving. (20 mins) (backchannel activities)
6. Wrap up (10 mins)
We will use digital tools, particularly collaborative and planning tools in the session. Warmth and energy are important in workshops :)
