We must look outside education for inspiration! User Experience (U/X) is a design principle which says that we must consider how the things we design interact with our users. Today, we apply that lens to our work as educators and leaders. Let's borrow from design to improve education!

Proposal summary

Purpose & objective

This presentation is designed to push the thinking of attendees in considering areas outside of education as inspiration for continuing to build their educational toolbox.

Participants will leave with a basic knowledge of User Experience (U/X) design.
Participants will leave with a basic knowledge of the research and models behind U/X design.
Participants will leave with a basic understanding of how the world of U/X can be used to drive more meaningful Education Experience (EDU/X) design to more positively impact the lives of students in our schools.

Outline

Introduction (5 minutes): Why are we talking about design?
Background (5 minutes): What is U/X and why should we care?
Building (10 minutes): How could we crosswalk U/X and education?
Synthesizing (20 minutes): So what is EDU/X and how does that impact my world as an educator?
Reflecting (5 minutes): What can I do with this information TOMORROW?

As a former educator, assistant principal, and district administrator, I fully understand the importance of engaging the audience and will have check-ins both chat-based and using tools like Mentimeter to keep engagement moving throughout the presentation.

conversations with education leaders about designing learning experiences,
books such as Teach Boldly, Personal and Authentic, and various U/X titles
direct experience from the classroom, school admin, and district leadership level.
