Proposal summary

Purpose & objective

The goal of the program was to solve a systemic problem of anxiety among our top students who were overloading on advanced classes in order to rise in class rank. As we explored systemic solutions to the problem, we also noted that our students lacked workplace readiness skills and were not community oriented. By implementing this program, we reduced student anxiety surrounding class rank, created real-world work opportunities for our students, and partnered with our community to foster service opportunities. During the pilot year, we had 75 students complete a 30 hour work internship and at least 70 students complete 25 community service hours. 47% of our high school students participated and completed over 6,000 hours of community service.

Outline

1) Discuss the problem of student anxiety associated with class rank and community dissatisfaction with student work preparedness,
2) Explain the development of community partnerships for service and work internships;
3) Analyze difficulties in transitioning from traditional class rank to this new Latin Honors program;
4) Discuss the constant challenges of continued implementation.
5) Future goals
