The purpose of this interactive session is to connect attendees with the tools, knowledge, and strategies necessary to support staff as they work to use Flipgrid for professional learning purposes. Session participants will be able to engage with artifacts created for various programs and school initiatives centered around professional development including, but not limited to, first-year mentoring, professional learning communities, and collaborative department cohorts. This session will include an introduction to the many ways that Flipgrid can be utilized to support the growth of educational professionals. By participating in this session, the attendee will:
1. Discuss how Flipgrid can connect educators with one another as they work to refine their teaching craft and pedagogical approaches through the use of GridPals, Flipgrid Live Events, Guest Mode, and Flipgrid AR
2. Gather professional development ideas through exposure to interdisciplinary teacher-created examples such as interactive augmented reality curricula, MixTape professional growth reflections, mentoring connections, EdCamp facilitation, and encourage the sharing of best practices
3. Learn how to construct their own virtual professional learning communities to meet the unique needs of their teachers and instructional staff
4. Gain access to resources and tutorials for Flipgrid that they can utilize to turkey this experience within their schools
Evidence of success will be determined and measured as the participants share their Flipgrid creations with their fellow attendees and global communities.
The presentation will include the following components:
Rationale for Using Flipgrid (5 minutes): We will first provide an overview of the Flipgrid platform, focusing primarily on its lesser used features such as Immersive Reader, Guest Mode, and Grid Pals, and Flipgrid AR. During this time, we will share our experiences using the platform with our colleagues and discuss the impact that it has had on our collective personal, academic, and social development. We will then offer a brief discussion of cognitive theory of multimedia communication (Clark & Mayer, 2011), constructivism learning theory (Elliott et al., 2000; WNET/Education, 2004), and ARCS Model of Motivational Design (Mobraw, 2020) in order to provide a theoretical framework to inform practices within the K-12 schools and higher education and inspire school leaders to cultivate a culture of collaborative communication and learning. We will also distribute an extensive annotated bibliography of resources that we use in conjunction with Flipgrid.
Virtual Gallery Walk (10 minutes): During this portion of the presentation, attendees will use their devices to engage in an interactive gallery walk where they will explore teacher designed artifacts from a wide range of contexts including staff professional development logs, first-year mentoring programs, professional learning communities, EdCamps, curriculum construction, lesson reflections, and more! In addition, they will gain an understanding of the many ways that Flipgrid can be used and gather implementation ideas through their exposure to the provided teacher creations.
Station Rotation: Interactive Attendee Design of Flipgrid Artifact (30 minutes): Attendees will have the opportunity to roam through self-directed station to station experiences and engage in the creation of various Flipgrid artifacts that fit their school’s needs. This will immerse participants in interactive, hands-on learning experiences that parallel those of their teachers and students. As attendees work on their respective projects, the presenters will circulate and assist participants in their design processes. Audience members will be provided tutorials on how to use different elements of Flipgrid such as GridPals, Guest Mode, Mic Only Mode, Flipgrid AR, Time Stamp Comments, and MixTapes creation. This portion of the presentation will embrace the structure of a makerspace and therefore attendees will have the opportunity to explore their own interests and become innovative designers with the support and coaching of the presenters.
Virtual Sharing and Exploration of Learning Artifacts (10 minutes): After designing the Flipgrid artifact of their choosing, each participant will generate a QR code to share out their learning artifact. Session participants will have an opportunity to explore one another’s final products and network with one another.
Roundtable Question and Answer (5 minutes): We will provide time at the end of our presentation for a roundtable question and answer session where participants can engage in peer-to-peer interaction to discuss how they can encourage their colleagues to use Flipgrid to foster effective professional growth and learning and use the principles and pedagogy discussed in a manner that suits their teachers’ needs. During this time, attendees will receive digital resources that include descriptions of various ways Flipgrid can be used to enhance professional development. This can be adapted for use within their respective schools.
