Larissa Giacomán teaches Spanish at St. Stephen’s and St. Agnes School in Virginia. She is the Founder of KidSpanish. She is involved in the National Network for Early Language Learners, where is a State Rep for DC and VA and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, where she was a presenter on EdTech Implementation and Creativity for Learning in the Target Language. She is an Board member of the Greater Washington Association of Teachers of Foreign Language and ISTE member.

With a Master's degree in Education and Human Development in the Field of Educational Technology Leadership from The George Washington University and certification as an ISTE educator, Kay is a forward-thinking expert in integrating technology into the classroom.

Session description

Elementary students celebrate their identities by reading identity-themed books, visually exploring portraits of influential Latino figures, and learning the importance of correct name pronunciation. They created online avatars with Pixton, designed 3D-printed identity badges which included QR codes for correct name pronunciation, emphasizing their unique superpower: identity.

Purpose & objective

This presentation aims to inspire and equip teachers with innovative strategies and insights for fostering inclusivity, celebrating diversity and empowering student identities in the classroom.

Objectives:

Empowerment through Technology:
Participants will discover how the project harnesses technology, such as Pixton and Tinkercad, to empower students to create digital avatars and 3D-printed Superpower Identity badges, encouraging self-expression and creativity.

Significance of Name Pronunciation:
Educators will recognize the importance of correct name pronunciation in fostering an inclusive classroom environment and enhancing respect for diverse identities through readily accessible recording of their own name for reference to others in our school community.

Explore Literature and Role Models:
Participants will learn how the project uses literature and exposure to influential Latino portraits to cultivate empathy, cultural awareness, and respect for diverse perspectives.

Promote Identity as Strength:
Participants will grasp the importance of nurturing students' self-identities as sources of strength and pride.

Considering that this will be a poster presentation, we are not adding times. We plan to tackle the following points during our conversation with attendees.
