I am the Library Media Specialist and 504 Coordinator for Charles R. Drew Middle School in Lincoln, AL. After receiving my undergraduate degree from Auburn University (War Eagle!) I taught in English and STEM classrooms for 9 years, and after completing my masters from Jacksonville State University I have worked as a Librarian for the last two year. My husband and I have four kids (yes, it's loud), and one dog. I love learning, reading, cooking, and watching football and baseball.

Session description

This session explains the idea of using Augmented Reality tools as well as other forms of media for students to explore in a style that mimics that of a Museum. We will discuss mixing medias and how to use AR tools to make exhibits that are engaging and informative.

Purpose & objective

We will discuss why it is important to mix types of media and how to use augmented reality tools such as merge cubes and augmented reality books to make museum style exhibits that are engaging and informative. Participants will be able to see examples of an exhibit with a Merge Cube, a VR set, articles and books, and Augmented reality books. They will see how the content works together to create a collection for learning. Attendees will leave with ideas they can implement in their own classrooms or libraries to mix print media, videos, and AR tools for more engaging learning.

Outline

An example exhibit will be set up that follows along with the Alabama Social Students Core of Study standards for an 8th grade history lesson, but this could be used across all content areas. They will discover artifacts and other medias that will allow them to explore that time period. Looking through the tools of the exhibit should take 8-10 minutes if they choose to explore all parts. These exhibits are device-based activities that attendees may participate in if they wish.
