Session description

It all started with a Magic Treehouse book about Australia. What it turned into is a cross-cultural connection between teachers and students in two continents, involving video chats, goody boxes, videos, and Flip conversations. See highlights our unit, and you can start an international partnership in your own school.

Purpose & objective

The purpose of this presentation is to demonstrate the power of global communication in today’s learning environment and provide opportunities for practicing global citizenship. Since many of our students will never travel to another country, this project gives them a chance to see that country through a different lens.

We also hope to inspire other teachers to find an international teaching partner to help students experience another culture. We wish to demonstrate how easy it is to bring cultural exchanges into your classroom to allow students to practice their global digital citizenship, whether they are elementary school aged or high schoolers.

Outline

The first 10 minutes of the presentation will be spent introducing ourselves and our context, including an interactive acknowledgement of country by the Australian teacher to introduce the traditional connection to land and language. The audience will be asked to participate through starter inquiry questions the Grade 2 students are asked when introducing the topic of Australia.

The next 30 minutes will be spent outlining the activities of the project, providing student examples, and demonstrating the various technologies used to enhance communication and learning activities.

The next 10 minutes will discuss the results and impact of this project. We know that these types of global connections are not new - but the technology that has been made available to us as teachers has allowed for more meaningful and live connections. We want to explore the idea that just because we have modern technology doesn’t mean that everything needs to be thrown out the window; old projects can be revamped and made more impactful thanks to the innovative technology.

The final 10 minutes will be for Q&A and collection of Australian swag so the audience can participate in some of the activities the US students experience.
