Session description

Join a co-author of Developing Digital Detectives to explore tangible techniques that K-12 students can employ to navigate the current information landscape. Delve into the four lenses introduced in the book and discover conventional methods for assessing information credibility that have become inadequate in today's click-driven environment.

Purpose & objective

The participants will.
- approach media & information literacy from a state of healthy responsibility.
- analyze a piece of media and make predictions if it is a piece of mis, dis, and mal information
- compare and contrast the information protocols they were taught as students with the new Developing Digital Detective lens framework.
- examine how they react to triggers from media
- compare access to information from a laptop versus a smartphone and its limitations.
- examine how they helped create the media and information landscape today.
- practice asking better questions when they come across new information.

Outline

The best way to understand the presentation is to look at the presentation itself. Although it has been tweaked several times to customize the school/district experience, it always has an active learning component positioned using Slido every 10 -15 minutes. This draws the attendees into the story and forces them to interact with the story as I teach them the four lenses (framework for being a digital detective).
