Session description
Purpose & objective
The purpose of the presentation is to give educators an engaging PBL option for students to present learning while developing filmmaking skills. Participants will understand how short documentaries are researched and structured. The skills covered will include: how to write a documentary script, best practices for audio recording, what is b-roll and how to effectively and ethically find relevant footage, how to edit audio, add imagery and export a video. Evidence of success will be a 1-2 minute completed documentary completed by the end of the presentation.
Outline
Introduction to the pedagogy of the Third Dimension of Literacy through our book and video series. (15 min)
Mini-filmmaking workshop (45min)
Participants will learn how to use common resources such as phones and laptops to create short documentary films. We will guide attendees in a hands-on activity that will have them create their own mini-movies about topics such as the environment, historical events, or biography.
We will lead attendees through the steps of writing a script, recording voice overs and finding b-roll to editing and sound design using readily available software.
At the end, we will screen examples of films made during the workshop.
