Session description

The Third Dimension of Literacy considers viewing media the next dimension of reading and creating media the next dimension of writing. By transforming essays into documentaries and short stories into narrative films, students increase subject engagement. This workshop shows how to incorporate film and media PBL into any classroom.

Purpose & objective

The purpose of the presentation is to give educators an engaging PBL option for students to present learning while developing filmmaking skills. Participants will understand how short documentaries are researched and structured. The skills covered will include: how to write a documentary script, best practices for audio recording, what is b-roll and how to effectively and ethically find relevant footage, how to edit audio, add imagery and export a video. Evidence of success will be a 1-2 minute completed documentary completed by the end of the presentation.
