Digital Learning Specialist
A certified educator in Texas for the past 21 years. I have worked in elementary education focusing on incorporating technology into our math and science programs. During our Covid year I moved into the virtual world of supporting our students technically while learning virtually. After 2020 I focused my attention on continuing support in the use of technology outside of the classroom and became a technology coach for other educators. I have worked with numerous campuses and instructors on how to actively engage their students while having accountability built into every activity.

Session description

This session will show participants how to create engaging digital escape rooms easily and quickly using Genially. We will show you how to further customize it with Bitmoji and Canva. We will also show you how this students can create their own escape rooms to showcase their learning!

Purpose & objective

Educational Problem 1: Teachers are overwhelmed and tired, and believe creating dynamic assignments like a digital escape room are too difficult to make or take too long. Many of the traditional ways of making an escape room (ex: Google Sites, Google Slides, etc.) can feel too overwhelming and time consuming.
--This presentation will show how teachers can easily make a quick Digital Escape Room with Genially. Instead of taking days or weeks to make an escape room, teachers can make one in a PLC if they wanted.

Education Problem 2: Students nation wide are suffering from lack of engagement. Many are simply regurgitating information they quickly memorized with little critical thinking or problem solving. Students need opportunities to show their voice, their creativity, and be involved in designing and problem solving.

Objective: By the end of this session, participants will know how to create digital escape rooms with Genially, as well as how they can add further customization with AI, Canva, and Bitmoji. Participants will know how they can assign this as a project for their students to showcase their learning and creativity.

Outline

Do Now:
As participants walk in, there will be a QR code and bit.ly to take them to a demo escape room I created so they can experience it as a participants. I will go through a live version so that participants without devices can follow along to see it. (10 minutes)

Hook
Escape Rooms are dynamic, engaging, require problem solving, and are fun! However many teachers are overwhelmed by the traditional ways or think it takes too much time. With our way, you can do this in a PLC. (5 minutes)

Live Demo of Process: (30 minutes)
We will do a live walkthrough of how to create a digital escape room where we walk them through the steps. Participants can watch or ideally follow along if they bring a laptop. Examples of subtopics:
--Signing into Genially and creating a free account
--Basic layout overview
--Finding an escape room template and editing the template
--Mixing templates or different sections
--Creating locks
--Methods to see how well students did/whether they succeeded
--Saving and sharing the Escape Room
--Additional ways to customize escape rooms (Bitmoji and Canva)
---Add in a variety of bitmoji (to add custom characters, action scenes, etc.) and Canva AI to help generate custom images.

Student Project (10min)
-Students can create free accounts, find and edit templates, and use Bitmoji and Canva to customize to their heart's content. The possibilities are endless.
-Tips for assigning it as a project based on grade level

Resources (5 min)
Participants will receive access to a variety of resources to help them create their own digital escape rooms and/or assign it to students, including a slidedeck/walkthrough and video walkthroughs we created
