Holly has 20 years of experience teaching students across all grades (K-12) and levels of post-secondary education. Her passion for psychology began as a child when she landed a unique role in a TV movie about autism. Her fascination with human behavior and a love for the brain swayed her to leave acting to pursue academia. As a first-generation university student, Holly understands many of our students’ challenges. A late diagnosis of ADHD prompted her to explore UDL to find ways to make education more inclusive for everyone.

Session description

During this COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) American and Canadian students collaborate on a mental health blog for teens that includes information on disorders, and location-specific resources while waiting for treatment. Attendees will learn how this collaboration uses technology to disseminate knowledge that can better support a younger generation.

Purpose & objective

We live in a global world and as such our students need to learn about cultures other than their own and how other cultures address sustainable development goals, specifically mental health challenges.
During this COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) American and Canadian students collaborate using a variety of online tools including Wix, WhatsApp, Google Classroom, Google Meet, Zoom, and Flip to create a mental health blog for teens that includes information on disorders, self-care, and location-specific resources while waiting for treatment. This collaboration is asynchronous over a six week period. The success of this collaboration will be measured using reflections.

So we will be presenting on the outcomes of this asynchronous collabation and its use of technology.
The attendees can expect to learn what a COIL is and what opportunities it provides for collaboration outside country borders. The attendees can also expect to learn how to utilize various technologies effectively in an asynchroous format to reach learners outcomes.
