Session description

Improve teacher efficiency, support student learning, and help keep everyone safe online by bringing AI professional development to your staff. At this session you’ll learn how AI is impacting education, and get equipped with the knowledge, tools, and resources you need to support your staff in their AI journey.

Purpose & objective

The purpose of this session is to increase the reach of AI technologies in schools. AI has the potential to positively impact education in numerous ways, but only if educators are provided quality professional development opportunities. Therefore, the object of this workshop is to equip participants with the knowledge and resources needed to run their own introduction to AI professional development session at their school, district, or organization.

Outline

1. Mock Professional Development Session (40 min): Participants will experience a professional development session similar to one they may be interested in providing to their staff. The session will cover the following topics in the following formats:
a. What is AI: Turn and talk, discuss with a partner what AI is and what it is not, followed by a brief share out.
b. AI in Education: In a jigsaw format, participants review recent articles from various sources identifying the impact of AI on education. Participants read and discuss articles in small groups and then share across groups.
c. Using AI as an Educator: Demo of how to use AI as part of a teacher workflow to perform tasks such as writing a lesson plan, writing an email to a parent, or creating a quiz on a specific topic. Some time will be devoted to exploration and practice.
d. Using AI to Support Student Learning: Exploration of AI tools developed for student use (ex. Kahnmigo) and how they can be used to support student learning.
e. Keeping Yourselves and Students Safe: Brainstorming time for participants to think critically about any concerns they have with cheating, student data and privacy, AI fictions, and bias. Questions and concerns will be addressed during the session as time allows.
2. Planning and Collaboration Time (20 min): After the session, participants will be given time to review the resources provided and to plan for a professional development session that they could provide to their staff. Participants will be provided with extended resources to explore as well as a planning guide to help them formulate their professional development. Included in the resources will be ways to evaluate the impact of AI on teachers and students in the upcoming school year(s). This time will be collaborative in nature with participants encouraged to discuss and plan together.
