Session description

In this session, participants will apply the ISTE Lesson Transformation Protocol to redesign learning and leverage technology. Through this experience, they will transform "traditional" lessons/activities/units of instruction by integrating the ISTE Student Standards and corresponding Indicators into their lesson design.

Outline

Engagement:
The session will begin with a discussion of the Digital Use Divide (the divide "that stands between those students who are asked to use technology for creation, exploration, and critical analysis and those who are not," (NETP, 2024, p. 10) and the Digital Design Divide (the divide that stands "between and within those systems that provide every educator the time and support they need to build their capacities to design learning experiences with digital tools, and those that do not” (NETP, p. 34).
The discussion will focus on the following questions:
1. What kinds of experiences do my students currently have with technology? (passive vs. active)
2. What do I, as an instructional designer and learning facilitator, need to provide transformative experiences for my students through leveraging technology?
*10 minutes, Parlay will be used to ensure that the discussion is inclusive

Content:
1. The presenter will introduce the ISTE Standards for Students:
-ISTE Student Standards are designed to empower student voice and ensure that learning is a student-driven process.
-The ISTE Students can be used as a road map to transform learning and close the Digital Use and Digital Design Divides. (5 min.)
2. The presenter will introduce the "From Tradition to Transformation" activity.
-In this activity participants will select a lesson, activity, or unit that they have traditionally used with their students. "Traditional" lessons will be provided for pre-service, new teachers, and teachers who do not have access to an existing lesson. "Traditional" lessons may include things like book reports, research projects, science experiments, ect. (5 min.)
-The presenter will introduce the ISTE Lesson Transformation Protocol. This protocol will be used to guide the participants through the transformation of their lessons. This process utilizes "guiding questions" to support teachers as they identify opportunities to transform the learning experience(s) by integrating the ISTE Student Standards and leveraging technology. (10 min.)
-Participants will be provided with digital copies of a lesson plan template, ISTE Standards for Students website with examples of the Standards/Indicators in practice, the Age Band Articulations of the ISTE Standards for Students, and exemplars of the lesson plan template. Participants will be given time to work through the ISTE Lesson Transformation Protocol (this may be done individually or with a partner; personal computers will be needed for this) and identify connections to a minimum of three ISTE indicators. Participants will describe how the ISTE indicators are applied to redesign/transform the traditional lesson. The presenter will act as a facilitator during this time. (20 min.)
-Participants will share their lesson redesigns with the whole group. (5 min.)
-Participants will reflect on the process/next steps in the "Tradition to Transformation" Padlet.
