Preserving Indigenous Language Through Storytelling with WriteReader

Session description
Outline
Participants will be greeted and we will begin by reading an excerpt of a story, Stolen Words by Melanie Florence, which speaks to the importance of preserving language. We will discuss the agenda for the session. (10 min) Next, teachers will be introduced to the Montana IEFA Essential Understandings and we will discuss how these activities address these Understandings and the ISTE Standards. Teachers will be given time to expore the MT Essential Understandings or similar from their own states or countries. (10 min) Examples will be shared from classrooms where books have been created. We will discuss the importance of the language and these books as the examples are shared. Teachers will have the opportunity to read some of the books on their own and discuss in small groups. (10 min) Presenter will introduce the tool WriteReader, giving a tour of the book creation tool and showing the important creation tools. (10 min). Teachers will be invited to create their own free WriteReader accounts and begin creating their first books. (10 min) We will have time at the end to share out ideas specific to their schools and communities for how they plan to implement these ideas and the impact they could make. (10 min) Codes for a free premium trial of the tool will be shared with all participants.
