Session description

How can writing teachers achieve an artful balance when integrating AI? Experience a lesson that shows how to integrate any major LLM in ways that enhance rather than erode student writing skills and still allow them to experience the reasoning that leads to their growth as thinkers and writers.

Outline

We will begin with two discussion questions:
What makes a piece of writing artful?
How can AI add or subtract from the artfulness of writing?

The audience will engage in a writing activity using a prompt, then use an LLM to create a response to the same prompt.

Peer-to-peer, then as a class, we will discuss what is added or subtracted from the writing when we include AI.

Using that knowledge, we will explore a third iteration, crafted individually by participants, but informed by vocabulary and organizational patterns of the AI text, honoring each writer's voice.

We will share our third iteration, discuss the ethics of using AI drafts in this manner, and consider student testimonials from my classroom on how this helped their process as writers not just their products.
