I. Assessing the Room: Digital survey regarding CBE prior knowledge or familiarity (7 mins.)
II. Foundation of CBE: Proficiency Scales (28 mins.)
a. Grading simulation with videos
b. Distribution of sample scales
c. Discussion of student ownership within the scales
d. Teacher responsibilities within proficiency scales (alignment, traditional assessment, authentic assessments, data analysis, and weekly mastery progression updates.)
e. Activity: Proficiency Scale provided with only 3.0 Mastery filled in. Attendees will work together to construct 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0.
III. Instructional Implementation of CBE (20 mins.)
a. Personalized pace and small learning groups
b. Opportunities for rapid mastery pacing
c. With less seat time, opportunities for passion exploration and internships (videos and examples)
IV. Clarifying Questions/ Encouragements (5 mins.)
+Review proficiency scale methodology and analyze select ELA and Math K-10th North Carolina Standard Course of Study aligned proficiency scales.
+Examine the possibilities of real time progression reporting within the school's use of the Empower Learning Management System which is specifically built for CBE schools.
+Reflect on the possibilities for replacing traditional seat time with SEL mentorship, passion exploration, and internship opportunities.
+Explore partnerships with schools and school districts who are blazing the trail within CBE reform.
