Session description

Discover how to redesign middle schools for a new generation. We'll introduce a framework of 5 systems-level strategies for how middle schools can raise achievement, expand opportunities, and improve culture–without adding staff or time, or losing the spirit of discovery at the core of the middle school model.

Outline

Framing the Challenge (5 minutes)
Present national data on stalled recovery, engagement decline, and enrollment pressures.

Engage participants with a quick poll on which challenge feels most urgent in their schools.
Strengthening Instruction & Intervention (15 minutes)
Show how to expand core instructional minutes and embed structured intervention blocks using quick case study and sample schedules.
Culture & Engagement (15 minutes)
Share strategies to reduce unstructured time and expand electives/choice without new staff.

Participants analyze a sample schedule to spot “hidden” unstructured time, then draft one new elective that could fit within existing resources.
Staffing Smarter (10 minutes)
Compare traditional teaming models with flexible approaches that lower costs while expanding opportunity.

Participants respond to a poll on which staffing shift could have the most potential in their context, followed by short turn and talk.
Action Planning & Closing (15 minutes)
Summarize the five-system framework with concrete case examples.

Participants identify one immediate scheduling or staffing action step.
Engagement Approach
Audience interaction every 10–15 minutes through polls or peer discussions.

Use of real artifacts—sample schedules, staffing charts, worksheets—to make the strategies immediately applicable.
