Session description

Discover two ways to help students meet their potential and use their voice to empower change. Blogging and podcasting will be showcased, illustrating innovative practices to give our youngest students a global voice. Giving students a platform to build communication, collaboration, and public speaking skills elevates their learning experiences.

Purpose & objective

Participants will learn two ways to create a connected classroom and break down the barriers to classroom walls directly from students. I will spend time discussing how students blog and podcast, two ways to reach a global audience which is accessible to all students. Tips and tricks will be shared in regard to data privacy in setting up these classroom experiences. I will show how students connected their literacy work to digital citizenship skills in this presentation. Templates for both learning experiences will be shared with participants so educators can plan to use their learning opportunities in their classrooms the next school year! I will show what each experience looks like from start to finish. I will share the directions, guidelines, tools, and give an overview of how to run this in their own classrooms or schools. I will go over failures and successes of each and what I have learned along the way. I will explain how I use Google Docs, Blogger, Google Slides, Google Sites, and Screencastify for each experience. The purpose of this presentation is for attendees to discover ways to help students meet their potential and use their voice to empower change. Depending on timing I would love to have some of my students come in virtually to share ways he/she/they can use their voice for good, maximizing his/her/their potential!!

Outline

The 90 minutes will be broken up into two 45 min segments. One will be dedicated to blogging and the other to podcasting. I will spend 5 min introducing each project, giving participants a chance to explore the process we went through. 30 min of each presentation will be dedicated to participants seeing the tools in action and then trying them out themselves. If I can have students there virtually we will do a Q and A with them.
