Educators are developing authentic, student-centered digital assessment opportunities for students. In order to prepare students for their futures, educators are moving beyond using technology to automate tasks and having students be consumers of content to integrating technology for student production and contribution.
Participants will learn how to integrate Book Creator into their curriculum, finding opportunities for students to actively engage in selecting and integrating a variety of technology tools to produce original content that demonstrates their learning for authentic purposes and audiences. Participants will learn how Book Creator can be used to foster access and engagement with multi-modal learning activities for all students so that they can demonstrate deep learning on content and skills. They will learn how students can contribute to the learning of others by transferring their knowledge into unique contexts that position them as digital tutors and teachers for an audience of their peers. During the presentation, participants will interact with Book Creator’s tools, templates, and integrations. They will also explore a variety of student artifacts from all grades and disciplines, demonstrating equitable opportunities for all students.
For instance, they will observe how many students integrate the Canva app, Google Maps, Drive, and original drawings and images during their creative process based on their desired purposes and goals. They will explore how students start a design or original graphic organizer in Canva and then merge it into their ebooks. Their books go beyond images and text as they work to personalize their books with original audio, video, and drawings. Students execute genre-specific features to suit their purposes, such as “choose your own adventure,” table of contents, and informational text features. For instance, fourth grade students can create informational texts with an audience of kindergartners in mind and then share the final products with those students.
Participants will explore the process and products of student-led conference ebooks, portfolios, math and science experiment books, and whole class collaborations. They will see how student ebooks are reflective of their intended audience and are shared with the community of learners, providing opportunities for valuable feedback and reflection over time.
Participants will be provided snapshots of the process of student utilization of Book Creator's tools as they produce original content, showcasing the process and products of creating authentic learning museums. They will be provided with examples of students producing digital representations of their learning as well as examples of how they turned books into tutorials and learning experiences or their peers.
Participants will have the opportunity to explore Book Creator's features and tools, with particular focus on the assistive learning components. Student artifacts will be displayed by content, genre, and grade level so that participants can deeply explore examples and templates that they can turnkey with their students.
Visuals and digital handouts will be provided so that participants can see how both curriculum and strategy instruction are tied to the creative process, including rubrics, student reflections, and progress tracking.
