Judy Keller is a passionate Technology Training Specialist for K-6 at Penn Manor School District in Lancaster, PA. She is Google Champion for Education, Google Certified Educator Level 1 and 2, a Google Certified Trainer, Global GEG Leader, PAECT member, Seesaw Ambassador, Applied Digital Skills Ambassador and 2022 Keystone Technology Innovator. She enjoys assisting teachers with technology to help create engaging lessons. Her passion in STEM is noted by many in her district. Each summer she holds multiple coding camps in her district for children K-6 at no cost to students.

Melissa Summerford has been in education for 16 years and has taught Pre-K, 2nd, 3rd, and Advanced Academics. Melissa is always looking for ways to innovate, improve her practices, and believes that it takes a team to build success. Melissa Summerford is Google Certified Trainer & Innovator and currently serves as a Teacher Success Champion at Kami. She is passionate about creating significant learning environments built on student choice and voice. Melissa believes that incorporating student voice and choice are the elements that lead to student ownership and engagement.

Session description

This session will explore how Google tools, the KamiApp, can be used to make learning more accessible for all students. We will discuss features such as text-to-speech, closed captions, and customizable interfaces that can help students with various disabilities participate fully in the classroom.

Purpose & objective

The purpose of this presentation is to show the educational accessibility tools available for students and to raise awareness of the various tools and resources that are available to help students with disabilities succeed in school.

The objective is to demonstrate and introduce educators to the assistive technology tools that can help students with their studies, and assist in completing their academic work.

Outline

Introduction:
Introduce the topic of accessibility and why it is important for all students.
Discuss the different types of disabilities that can affect learning.
Share some examples of how Google tools and KamiApp can be used to make learning more accessible.
Text-to-speech:
Explain how text-to-speech can help students who are blind or have difficulty reading.
Demonstrate how to use the text-to-speech feature in Google Docs, and Slides..
Discuss some tips for using text-to-speech effectively.
Closed captions:
Explain how closed captions can help students who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Demonstrate how to add closed captions to a video in Google Drive.
Discuss some tips for creating effective closed captions.
Customizable interfaces:
Explain how customizable interfaces can help students with different learning styles and abilities.
Demonstrate how to change the font size, color, and contrast in Google Docs.
Discuss some other ways to customize the interface to make it more accessible.
Using Kami:
All-in-one tool with built-in screen reader options
Allow students to explain thinking in multiple ways such as voice, video, and text.
Q&A :
Answer any questions that participants have about using Google tools and the KamiApp for accessibility.
