Dr. R. Lynn Hummel Jr. Ed. D. is an Associate Professor at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania. His career in education has always involved integrating the best practices of combining the worlds of technology and education. His previous professional positions include: Instructional Technology Specialist, Cooperative Education Coordinator, Assistant Principal and Assistant Superintendent of Schools. He has been an amateur radio operator since he passed his first exam in 5th grade.

Session description

Explore how infusing amateur radio in the classroom to talk to astronauts can inspire learning, spark STEM-related instructional experiences, and provide students with a lifelong skill. Discover best practices and start-up steps at this session. Getting students involved with amateur radio in schools aligns with multiple ISTE Standards.

Purpose & objective

This presentation is built upon my lifelong experience of being an amateur radio operator. I first obtained my amateur radio license when I was in 5th grade. This learning experience has coincided with my professional career in education over the past 30 years. Amateur radio provided me with a venue to speak what it was like to be involved with amateur radio at a young age to a national audience when I was invited to speak at the International Hamvention in Dayton Ohio while I was a middle school student. I seek to share my lifelong passion for learning associated with this topic to others who can change future students lives by introducing them to learning experiences associated with amateur radio.

The model of sharing my passion for amateur radio by allowing students to learn about and work with an amateur radio station or group within their school learning environment. Step by step instructions will be provided to communicate with the International Space Station by using amateur radio. Information will be provided to show that this process can be easy to setup, is easy to operate, and has potential to instill all areas of STEM educational lessons and learning experiences to students who participate. Students can prepare for and receive their own amateur radio license issued by the Federal Communications Commission.

The global collaboration and student engagement aspect is vital to our students and has been infused within other sections of this proposal. Multiple lesson plans can be formed with direct connections to the ISTE standards on the topics of radio science, electronics, math, wireless technologies, environmental influences on radio waves, radio frequencies, building antennas, are just a few examples.

Resources with sample lesson plans, examples of how lessons connect with ISTE standards, stories related to best practices, and strategies for success will be shared during this session with attendees. Evidence of success will be shared through future goals and experiences of others who have been successful with bring amateur radio into educational settings.

The purpose of this presentation is to change the world for our students by empowering them with skills needed to be successful in todays society.

Overall I am super excited to be given the opportunity to present this session at ISTE 2024!

Outline

As a poster session I would share ideas, best practices, and examples of infusing amateur radio and how to communicate with astronauts into a school setting to ISTE attendees who visit my poster session station. I plan to incorporate pictures, stories, and examples into my presentation that can be repeated as attendees rotate throughout the poster session experience.

I plan to have a presentation prepared that is approximately 10 - 15 minutes in length that can be repeated throughout the duration of the poster session. This approach was extremely successful while presenting a poster session at ISTE 2022 and ISTE 2023. One of the moderators from a prior year indicated I had the most number of attendees ask them where my session was located because they heard amazing things from others and wanted to stop by to learn for themselves.
