Susan Moore is Meriden Public Schools’ Director of Instructional Technology and Curriculum. She supervises K-12 digital content and has reimagined technology programming at the elementary level. She supports the district’s student-centered learning initiatives, implements the Personalized Learning Program and I’m Charged teacher initiative, and coordinates the annual Take Charge and Code family event. Mrs. Moore is dedicated to sharing best practices and, to that end, organized Meriden’s Blended Learning Summit and Google Show & Tell. As an early adopter of instructional technology, she has provided multiple professional learning opportunities both within and outside the district.

Session description

This session will highlight how the Meriden Public Schools reimagined technology instruction in all 8 of their K-5 elementary schools by aligning curriculum with the ISTE Standards for Students, redesigning traditional computer labs into Genius Labs, and leveraging community partnerships to make new technologies available to students.

Purpose & objective

Traditional computer labs typically include rows of desktops facing the walls or lined up in rows facing the teacher’s desk. Unfortunately, this arrangement does not allow for student collaboration or promote creative thinking. Mobile devices allow the structure of the technology classroom to shift and empower students to collaborate and share as they build skill. This presentation will demonstrate how redesigning computer labs and incorporating student choice into all lessons promotes student engagement and enhances learning. Participants will also see how community partnerships can support this work. Examples of student work will be shared as evidence of success.
