Josh is a 6th grade Literacy teacher, reading interventionist and awesomeness expert. He also coaches a First Lego League robotics team. Outside of school, he is the author of the book Awesome Sauce: Create Videos to Inspire Students, Engage Parents and Save You Time and hosts the Awesome Sauce EDU podcast.

Session description

In this session you'll engage with a wide range of tools and strategies for supporting students' social/emotional learning and mental health.

Purpose & objective

Participants will identify strategies to connect with students and support their social/emotional needs.

Outline

1. Introduction to my own mental health journey. (10 min.)
2. Self care reminders for educators. (5 min.)
3. Share strategies to support students, additional strategies may be added between now and the conference (40 min.)
a. Digital routines and procedures
b. Daily video announcements
c. Positive gallery walks
d. Box breathing, participants will be walked through this breathing exercise as well as shown resources for students to try this at home and tips for creating a digital SEL toolbox
e. QR codes for quicker access to counseling (pros/cons)
f. Calming noises
g. Creating moments of calm for the teacher and students through game play
h. Non-tech- Get outside
i. Movement breaks, participants will particpate in a movement break and will receive tips to add to their digital SEL toolbox
j. Grounding exercises
k. Cheers and chants, participants will learn a new cheer
l. Food
m. Digital tools like the Calm app for continued resources
4. At the end, participants will share their favorite tips and tools in a padlet
