Session description
Purpose & objective
Teachers and school leaders will be introduced to Project Heart and leave with turn-key resources to help them integrate philanthropy education into their lessons. Innovative educators know that teaching kids to think outside themselves, how to see problems and needs around them, then solve those problems collaboratively will enhance social emotional learning, but they feel like they don't have enough time. Project Heart is the solution they've been looking for! We have a wide variety of case studies in different schools, but highlighting Ms. Gilmore's elementary aged ELD students is incredibly compelling. To see traditionally marginalized students finding academic and community success only months after they faced a treacherous journey to the United States is a powerful illustration of how teachers can't afford NOT to integrate philanthropy education into their existing curriculum. All lessons plans are currently in draft form, but will have been delivered and revised before ISTELive24. Participants will have access to all lessons created, with integration of EdTech tools specifically called out, as well as ALL other Project Heart materials at no cost to them.
Outline
Erin Gilmore will start with a brief summary of her experiences with new students, focusing on their community and educational needs. Laurel Elementary' s 23-24 ELD students face not only a language barrier, but also housing and food insecurity issues that come alongside fleeing your home country for the U.S. Instead of coming together to meet perceived needs, Erin and her colleagues turned that back to the students and provided opportunities for them to have a voice and leadership in solving problems to help the entire school and surrounding community. She will have photos, video clips, and exemplars of work on hand to illustrate the parts most meaningful to the participants with whom she is engaging at the time.
We will provide sample activities as well as an interactive quiz game with some little giveaways from OtterCares, the nonprofit foundation that offers Project Heart. Erin will focus on the why and how she used Project Heart, while Sarah Weeks will focus on the logistics of accessing the online resources and suggestions on how to use the resources for their specific classroom situations. Sarah is intimately familiar with the stories here https://myprojectheart.org/project-heart-in-action, and will have more evidence and stories next summer to connect with the ISTELive24 participants.
Sarah hosted a poster session in 2016, and learned that a formal presentation doesn't work very well for the rotating audience. Snippets of stories to spark conversation, posing curious questions about their work, and then providing tangible resources targeted to their needs is the best way to engage participants. Erin and Sarah will spark some great conversations and offer valuable takeaways for the amount of time specific to each participant.
Supporting research
Project Heart was created through the Understanding by Design process and aligned to Common Core standards. Those lessons are all still available, however, Project Heart continues to grow with the latest research! You will now see lessons focused on CASEL Competencies, the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals, and NFTE Entrepreneurial mindsets.
We have found many critical literacy resources to support Project Heart! https://myprojectheart.org/images/default/Book-List-Companion-for-Project-Heart.pdf
