Suzanne Brazzell is an ISTE Certified Educator and holds a Level 2 Google Educator certification. With a decade of experience teaching elementary and middle school math, Suzanne transitioned to the role of Site Tech Coordinator at a K-8 school in the Vail Unified School District. She earned her Master's in Educational Technology from Northern Arizona University. Beyond her regular duties, Suzanne continues to engage with students through after-school programs, including the podcast and broadcast clubs. Her true passion lies in mentoring educators, guiding them to seamlessly integrate technology into their teaching methods, enhancing engagement while reducing stress.

Rita Boyd, ISTE Certified Educator, is a former fifth grade teacher turned Educational Technology Coordinator for the Vail School District in southern Arizona. She is a member of her school district’s Educational Leadership Team and Computer Science Advisory Team, and has presented about Computational Thinking at several conferences. Rita has collaborated with educators from around the world to host professional developments related to Digital Citizenship with the ISTE DigCit PLN. Her passion is empowering teachers to implement technology in their classrooms so that students can experience firsthand what it means to be digital agents of change.

Dr. Erin Rabuck is a dedicated and passionate educator who has made a lasting impact in the Vail Unified School District since 2009. With a career spanning over a decade and a half, she has continually demonstrated her commitment to student success and academic achievement. Dr. Rabuck began her journey in 2009 as a fifth-grade teacher, where she quickly became known for her innovative teaching methods and ability to connect with her students. In 2021, Dr. Rabuck embarked on a new journey and became a sixth-grade science teacher. In 2022, Dr. Rabuck assumed the role of Student Achievement Teacher.

Session description

Dr. Rabuck shows how to blend Accountable Talking Stems into Nearpod lessons, boosting student engagement and accountability. Attendees will leave with practical insights for revitalizing their teaching approaches with these strategies.

Purpose & objective

We propose an engaging and informative presentation for the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) conference focused on leveraging the power of Nearpod to implement Accountable Talking Stems in the classroom. Accountable Talking Stems are a proven strategy to promote critical thinking, effective communication, and active participation among students. When combined with Nearpod's interactive features, they create a dynamic and inclusive learning environment that benefits educators and students alike.

Introductions Using Nearpod (5 minutes)

Nearpod Overview (10 minutes): A brief introduction to Nearpod, showcasing its interactive features and its potential to transform traditional lessons into engaging experiences.

Introduction to Accountable Talking Stems (20 min): We will begin by defining Accountable Talking Stems and highlighting their significance in promoting student accountability and communication skills.

Creating Nearpod Lessons with Accountable Talking Stems (15 minutes): We will guide participants through the process of designing Nearpod lessons that incorporate Accountable Talking Stems. We'll provide step-by-step instructions and share practical tips for effective implementation.

Interactive Demonstration (10 minutes): Participants will engage in a hands-on activity using Nearpod to experience the synergy between Accountable Talking Stems and interactive content. This segment will highlight the benefits of this approach in real-time.

Best Practices and Classroom Integration (10 minutes): We'll discuss best practices for using Nearpod with Accountable Talking Stems, share examples from real classrooms, and explore how this strategy aligns with ISTE standards.
