Tara brings together people, processes, and technology to transform learning in NYC Public Schools. As Director of the Digital Learning and Innovation (DLI), Tara collaborates with educators, school leaders, and district leaders to personalize learning environments and experiences through technology solutions. Her unique expertise spans both teaching and learning, as well IT, strengthened by her former roles as Director of Citywide Ed Tech. Tara's classroom is deeply rooted in special education and ensuring all students needs are met universally. She helps connect IT, pedagogy, and adult learning to sustain an enterprise learning architecture that empowers all.

Megan Kiefer is the founder of Take Two Film Academy. A vocal proponent of film’s power to create positive change in the world, she’s been teaching storytelling and filmmaking to young people since 2004. She’s the author of The Third Dimension of Literacy, and the founder of two retail companies. Kiefer is also an active member of the Summit Series and the Charles & Lynn Schusterman REALITY Initiative. She holds a BA from Tufts University and an MBA from Babson College.

Session description

The HE3AT program offers NYCPS high school students on-site exposure to industry partners, delivers PBL curricula around real world problems, and builds critical thinking and research skills. This talk explores recent partnerships where students explore wicked problems, develop responses using AI, and communicate their learning using media literacy techniques.

Purpose & objective

The purpose of this presentation is to model ways in which students can be connected to leaders in STEM industries. We will also discuss strategies to engage students to consider ethical and beneficial ways to use AI.

10 minutes - Case Model: Tweed - Students will be charged to design policy for how AI should/can be used schools
10 minutes - Case Model: Cisco - Students consider how to use AI and Cisco’s technology to reduce violence in south Brooklyn

10 minutes - Case Model: TAG - Students brainstorm to use AI to help the UN SDG Goal 4 of increasing quality education
