Session description

Discover K20 LEARN—a rich resource hub for 5E lessons, effective teaching strategies, games, and tech tools, enhancing authentic teaching. Depart with free, classroom-ready materials. This session offers hands-on, collaborative learning.

Purpose & objective

The presentation tackles the pressing educational issue of integrating technology effectively to enhance authentic teaching and learning practices. It emphasizes the need for educators to adapt to technology's transformative potential, effectively use resources like those on the K20 LEARN website, and embrace innovative teaching methods. In a rapidly changing educational landscape, this presentation provides guidance on how to navigate and harness technology to enhance teaching practices and improve learning outcomes.
The presentation's primary goal is to acquaint educators and education professionals with the K20 LEARN website and its free extensive array of educational materials. It aims to provide them with a thorough understanding of the platform, showcase the value of its content, and offer guidance on optimizing these resources within educational contexts. Furthermore, the presentation aims to empower educators by equipping them with tools, strategies, and materials accessible via the K20 LEARN website. It underscores the capacity of these resources to enhance their teaching practices and encourages the integration of technology and innovative teaching approaches into their classrooms or educational settings. Additionally, the presentation highlights collaboration and practical application as key components. It indicates that the session will be interactive and cooperative, providing participants with opportunities to actively engage with the resources, exchange ideas on their implementation, and potentially collaborate on the development of effective utilization strategies.
Objective 1: Hands-On Exploration
Participants will learn to navigate the K20 LEARN website effectively, including locating and accessing different resource categories such as 5E lessons, teaching strategies, games, and technology tools.
Objective 2: Enhanced Understanding
Participants will develop the skills to evaluate and select resources on the K20 LEARN website that align with their teaching goals and student needs, considering factors like grade level, subject matter, and instructional approach.
Objective 3: Thoughtful Integration
Participants will formulate a plan for integrating the resources from the K20 LEARN website into their teaching practices, including identifying specific lessons, strategies, or tools they can use with their students or colleagues to enhance the teaching and learning experience.
This session will utilize the 5E format to deepen participant understanding through activities that engage, explore, explain, extend/elaborate, and evaluate. The presentation will model multiple instructional strategies and tech tools included on the K20 LEARN website.
The K20 LEARN website has been used throughout the country and across the world by educators since the re-launch in September 2021. Statistics currently show over 1,429,227 downloads of 5E lessons, 10,145 downloads of tech tool cards, and 112,040 downloads of instructional strategy cards.

Outline

Engage (5-10 minutes): Participants will add their responses to the Menti question using their device or laptop/iPad provided: What characteristics define a resource that promotes authentic learning? After entering their responses, they will be able to view and discuss responses from others that appear in a word cloud format.
-Tech Tool: Mentimeter - Mentimeter enables you, while teaching, to visualize your students' opinions with real-time graphs and charts. Get input from in-person or online students with live polls, quizzes, word clouds, Q&As, and more. This allows for live interaction between you and your students with the web based mobile polling app, ensuring that everyone is a part of the presentation.

Explore (20 minutes): Participants will view the short introductory video to the K20 LEARN website using their device or provided laptop/iPads. After viewing the video, participants will then choose a Task Card to complete that focuses on a specific section of the K20 LEARN website. Choices for Task Cards will be Instructional Strategies, 5E Lessons, Tech Tools, Games, or Tech-Integrated Strategies. A note catcher handout will be made available for participants to take notes if they choose.

Explain(15 minutes): Participants will scan the QR code available to view the Authentic Learning Framework Infogram (https://infogram.com/1p7l9w7j5v20k9uzlg125ql6vlan6xmvqqd). After reading the framework and discussing with the presenters, participants will complete the strategy below. Facilitators provide guidance to help participants make sense of concepts, clarify misunderstandings, and connect new information to prior knowledge.
-Instructional Strategy: I Notice, I Wonder - Students use guided inquiry to create and answer good questions from the information at hand, activating their prior knowledge and engaging them in higher-order thinking.

Extend (25 minutes): Participants will create an account in LEARN and spend time exploring all the available resources. After creating an account, they will now be able to “bookmark” or “favorite” resources that will be stored in their account for quick reference in the future. After finding valuable resources, participants will use a Padlet to complete the instructional strategy below identifying how they plan to utilize the K20 LEARN resources within their learning environment.
-Instructional Strategy: 3-2-1 This writing activity enables students to summarize their understanding of material, to evaluate understanding for gaps in knowledge, and to communicate this to their teacher
-Tech Tool: Padlet - Padlet is a web app that works like a digital bulletin board. Students and teachers may use Padlet to share ideas and collaborate by posting notes, text, and images to the board.

Evaluate (20 minutes): Both facilitators and participants will assess participants’ understanding of new information through discussion and using the instructional strategy below.
-Instructional Strategy: S.I.T. - Using this strategy, students identify something they find surprising, interesting, and troubling about the selected stimulus. Using S-I-T, students can summarize and demonstrate their interaction with a text, an image, or a video.
