Session description

Youth depression and suicide are at crisis levels. Some blame technology for causing or exacerbating the problem. But technology can also help. Learn how four technology leaders are helping their districts use AI-enabled tools to fill critical mental health resource gaps and keep students safe, secure, & ready to learn.

Purpose & objective

The purpose of our ISTE presentation, is to explore the transformative potential of artificial intelligence in the educational landscape. We aim to demonstrate how AI, particularly large language models (LLMs) and advanced data processing tools, can significantly enhance school safety, security, and overall student readiness by providing actionable insights to educators.

Educational or Infrastructure Challenge/Situation

Schools face increasing challenges related to safety, security, and the overall well-being of students. Traditional methods of data collection and analysis, such as surveys, are often inadequate for timely and actionable insights.

Technology Intervention

We will introduce and discuss Securly Discern, an AI-powered tool that generates critical K-12 data sets from students' online activities, offering a more immediate and accurate picture of school safety and student needs compared to traditional survey methods.

Models Employed

Our presentation will delve into the workings of large language models (LLMs), specifically the transformer architecture, explaining how these models effectively analyze large data sets to identify patterns and generate insights.

Lesson Plans or Instructional Activities/Strategies Employed

We will share real-world examples and experiences from the pilot phase of Securly Discern, illustrating how schools have utilized AI-driven insights to make data-driven decisions that improve safety, climate, and overall school operations.

Evidence of Success

The presentation will highlight success stories from pilot participants, demonstrating tangible benefits and the positive impact of AI on school safety, security, and student readiness. These examples will showcase how access to comprehensive data has empowered schools to enhance their strategic planning and operational efficiencies.
