Kutztown University
Donna is a Computer Science Instructor at Kutztown University focusing on student-driven and project-based learning. She teaches the Senior Seminar Capstone - a 2 semester course where teams design, build and deploy their creations . During her 30+ yrs. in industry, she worked with and guided clients in the analysis and design of their systems, adopting software methods, and building successful teams. Donna also co-founded Viddler, a video-centric employee engagement platform. She is passionate about STEM education for middle school and post-secondary students.

Lisa Frye has a background full of industrial experience prior to joining the faculty at Kutztown University. Her professional career includes experience as a software engineer, systems engineer, network and system administrator, and database support analyst for local industry and educational institutions. She is a published author in the computer science field and has been a PI or co-PI on three National Science Foundation grants. Her research interests include computer science education, networking, and systems administration. Dr. Frye has taught within the computer science field at numerous universities and is in demand for her expertise on academic and industry committees.

Session description

This session demonstrates a partnership between higher ed and local companies to pique the interest of high school females in STEM careers. 5 years of analytics for the symposium are presented. Learn the steps needed to create your own symposium, including resources, detailed timeline, activities, tips and tricks.

Purpose & objective

By the end of this session, participants will
- understand the benefits and format of Girls in STEM Symposiums
- have a step-by-step guide for holding their own Girls in STEM Symposium

Outline

Background: The Girls in Computer Science Symposium at Kutztown University (KU) is a one-day event supported by KU faculty, students, and industry partners. The industry partners are a crucial component as they provide real-world examples of STEM in industry. They also donate prizes to be raffled off to the students. The program has been very successful and we want to scale so individual schools can hold their own events. Summary of success stats for Girls in Computer Science growing to Girls in STEM and adding Jr. Girls in STEM.
