Purpose and Objectives:
Our presentation is your opportunity to rise above the challenges and limitations of contemporary education. We will equip you with powerful skills and strategies to lead your students toward personalized success while prioritizing your own well-being. The Modern Classroom approach aligns beautifully with ISTE’s 2.5 Designer educator standard: “Educators design authentic, learner-driven activities and environments that recognize and accommodate learner variability."
Participant Outcomes:
Learners will understand…
-the three pillars and the benefits of a Modern Classroom approach: blended instruction, self-paced learning, and mastery-based grading.
-how a pedagogical approach can create a classroom environment that is student-centered and collaborative.
-how to differentiate, personalize, and build teacher and student agency.
-the benefits of upfront preparation for their own future self’s well-being.
-the benefits for their student's social-emotional development.
Technology:
-Mentimeter polls to increase engagement and show growth
-Create captivating instructional videos with Screencastify or Explain Basics/Everything
-Design and share engaging lessons with Canva and other online tools
-Use Flipgrid to foster collaboration and reflection during the conference and have a bank of resources to refer to after the conference
-Access session materials through mobile friendly QR codes/abbreviated links (bitly)
-Streamline assessment and grading with Google Suite or the LMS of your choice
Instructional Activities and Strategies:
Have you ever wondered about the potential of a modern pedagogical model? In our workshop, you'll dive right in. Participants will start by viewing a "live" instructional video and then jump into dynamic activities through a choice board, all within Modern Classroom Project's approach. For each pillar, all attendees will analyze K-12 samples to discuss their efficacy, diving deep into what "Good Looks Like" using provided rubrics. Then participants will choose a beginner or advanced route to learn more. Finally attendees can choose to apply their learning to their own lessons. As participants explore the differentiated pillars of mastery-based grading, self-paced learning, and blended instruction, they will see how this approach enhances student agency and achievement. Walk in your students' shoes, fostering empathy for your future self. As we all share classroom anecdotes and engage in collegial conversations, this pedagogical approach will come alive and transform the classroom for you and your students.
Evidence of Success:
This instructional model is not just theory; it's grounded in real-world results. Please go to: https://www.modernclassrooms.org/research to read the research on Modern Classroom Project’s blended instruction, self-paced learning, and mastery-based grading practices.
I. Introduction (5 MINUTES)
Start with a Mentimeter Poll about participants' understanding of self-paced learning
(Revisit the self-paced learning definition at the end)
II. Blended, Self-Paced Lesson (10 MINUTES)
Goal: Experience blended learning simultaneously as a teacher and student and see how making instructional videos transform your instructional minutes.
Description: “Live” Instructional video modeling both student and teacher roles on the three pillars of the Modern Classroom approach.
Pillar 1: Blended instruction
Pillar 2: Self-paced learning
Pillar 3: Mastery-based grading
III. Choice Board Personalized Learning Opportunity (30 MINUTES)
Goal: Experience self-paced learning and mastery-based grading
Description: A 30-minute personalized work session where participants determine their own focus and follow a differentiated path to learn about the three pillars.
IV. Mastery check and reflection (15 MINUTES)
Goal: Demonstrate growth and understanding of one or more pillars
Description: Use Flipgrid to share new learning and understanding with session participants. This collaborative resource will be a take-away for continued learning.
Growth: Use Mentimeter for a new poll and reflect on changes in defining self-paced learning.
In addition to the qualitative feedback the presenters experience by working with students and teachers using this pedagogical approach, the Modern Classroom Project also provides academic research to support why this method is so transformational.
