Kali (she/her) leads a distributive approach to building AI literacy for students, educators, leaders, and families in Denver Public Schools while also working towards a PhD in STEM Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Denver, researching culturally and linguistically sustaining pathways for integrating AI into teaching and learning. Kali also spent a decade teaching Social Studies, Language Arts, and GT within and around Philadelphia and Southwest Denver. Kali is proud to live in colorful Colorado, where she is a hiker, cyclist, avid reader, vinyl collector, intersectional co-conspirator, devoted partner, dog owner, and - most importantly - mom of a toddler.

Session description

Denver Public Schools hosts an annual STEAM Expo, and will share successes, next steps, and resources to inspire STEAM programming in your classroom, school, district, or beyond! This interactive session offers a blueprint, resources, and insights into planning similar events, student and teacher voices, and discussion with DPS’ STEAM team.

Purpose & objective

Purpose:
The main purpose of this presentation is to provide educators and stakeholders with insights, resources, and a blueprint for planning similar STEAM events in their own educational settings. It also aims to highlight the importance of culturally and linguistically sustaining teaching and learning, and how the DPS STEAM Expo exemplifies this approach.

Objectives:

1) Understanding of STEAM Expo Principles: Participants will gain a deep understanding of the principles and key components that make up a successful STEAM Expo, such as creativity, collaboration, communication, and critical thinking.

2) Awareness of Culturally and Linguistically Sustaining Learning: Educators will be introduced to the concept of culturally and linguistically sustaining learning and its significance in promoting diversity and inclusion within the STEAM education context.

3) Resource Access: Participants will leave the presentation with access to a wealth of resources, including planning templates, marketing materials, instructional activities, and tools, to help them implement similar STEAM events in their own classrooms, schools, or districts.

4) Blueprint for Event Planning: Attendees will be equipped with a blueprint or framework for planning and organizing STEAM Expos, including guidance on logistics, curriculum development, and community engagement.

5) Engagement with DPS' STEAM Team: The presentation will facilitate direct interaction and discussion with members of the DPS STEAM team, allowing participants to ask questions, share ideas, and gather insights from experienced educators.
