Sr. Research Scientist
Digital Promise
Alison Shell is the Senior Research Scientist on the Learner Variability Project at Digital Promise. She is passionate about bridging the research-practice gap and thinking about how we can share our knowledge across. Her work focuses on surfacing research across the learning sciences to empower educators to use research to better understand their students and support learner success. She recently moved from D.C. to return to her Boston roots with her two young children who she learns more from than she could from reading all the research in the world. Alison received her Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Maryland.

Session description

The goals of education are shifting from academic, to dispositions, yet little has been done to shift pedagogical approaches. The Portrait of a Learner will: ground these dispositions as research-based factors inside a whole-learner framework; and provide research-based practices to empower learners for the future.

Purpose & objective

Participants will engage in discussions to uncover: 1)What the research says about the core values/21st century skills highlighted across frameworks and portraits 2)What these look like in early childhood and how they shift through development 3)How these connect across our whole learner framework to other key factors of learning and why this matters 4)Key pedagogical practices that can support these skill directly and through other key factors of learning 5)How to use and apply research in teaching practices using tools like the Learner Variability Navigator to support inclusive learning
