In this beginner-intermediate Prek-12 presentation, we will introduce educators in all disciplines to the myriad of ways in which AI can be leveraged to enhance student achievement, close the ever-increasing technology gap, provide equity and access to all students in a variety of neurodivergent groups, and foster collaboration between teachers across disciplines. The primary emphasis will be to offer pedagogical support by giving educators a general overview of the best practices and approaches for how AI can be used in the most efficient, effective, and ecumenical way to build a strong foundation for AI integration in an educational setting. During the presentation, attendees will be given guidance on how to enhance critical media literacy and encourage a healthy amount of output skepticism for all users, which will ultimately establish a baseline for educators.
The presentation will rest on the premise that AI is a supplement to excellent teaching, rather than a threat to traditional educational methods. This principle will be demonstrated by demystifying the concept of AI by highlighting the ways in which AI is currently being used in a variety of industries, which only continue to expand. This key principle will be illustrated throughout the presentation by illuminating how the SAMR Model can be addressed using AI, moreover, how instruction and curriculum can be substituted, modified, augmented, and redefined to enhance and transform teaching and learning. In order to achieve our intended outcome of laying the groundwork for a broad understanding of how AI can be used as a pedagogical and curricular tool, we will establish an understanding of what AI is, how it is programmed and trained, and how AI can be leveraged in the classroom. This will be followed by an explanation of considerations for general use (including COPPA), as well as usage limitations for school districts that may or may not have a codified set of district policies in place to articulate appropriate AI implementation in the classroom. We will hook our audience in with an engaging activity that requires participants to differentiate between AI-generated images and real photographs. We will examine ways in which ChatGPT can be used in the classroom, including limited acknowledgement of ways in which to detect plagiarism or use of AI for student academic integrity. Next we will delve into understanding the uses of AI are significant to prek-12 education through exploration of how AI can be used to promote critical and creative thinking, enhance assessments, develop digital projects, and increase student collaboration in ways that could not otherwise be achieved. The various relevant, fluid, and diverse uses of AI can be used in an educational setting and how AI can be used as a mechanism to differentiate instruction and assessments to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of students in every educational/ academic setting.
