Participants will:
- understand how CS concepts can be applied to cross-curricular topics like ELA
- be able to create a basic coding project in Scratch Jr
- understand where to find resources to support teaching coding and CS using Scratch Jr
- have a bank of lesson ideas and inspiration for applying CS and Scratch Jr in their own classrooms
I will introduce the topic by gauging participant comfort level/ability level with a collaborative space such as a Padlet. I will then talk about my experience with coding, starting as a reluctant learner/teacher of CS to how it has become one of my favorite things to teach because of the excitement it causes in the students/classrooms I am able to teach to. I will show some examples of student-created projects in Scratch Jr. (15 minutes) Then, I will give a brief tutorial (15 min) on how to use Scratch Jr and give participants time to explore and use the FREE app while I walk around to answer questions and provide support. I will leave 15 min at the end for participants to share their creations on the Padlet, and answer questions. At the end I will provide access to resources such as the Scratch Jr website, a Wakelet collection I created, and coding cards and a coding book.
