Martha Bongiorno is a student voice activist and is currently serving as a school librarian in Metro Atlanta. She supports students and educators by pushing boundaries of traditional education to empower learners as thinkers and creators to make positive change in their communities. With her unique perspective from the heart of the school, she explores how the tapestry of learning is interwoven with literacy, technology, creativity, and student voice. Martha serves others as an ISTE Ambassador, Immediate Past-President of Georgia Library Media Association, a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert and Master Trainer, a Flipgrid Student Voice Ambassador since 2016, and an Adobe Creative Leader.

Meggan Ford is a librarian just north of Atlanta. She is a self proclaimed crazy cat lady and a huge lover of Saturdays with coffee and a good book. In 2021, Meggan's library program was chosen as the exemplary library program for the Georgia Library Media Association. In 2020, she was honored to become the Fulton County Library Media Specialist of the Year. Meggan is also a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert and Adobe Certified level 2 Certified Educator.

Session description

AI is becoming more prevalent in our digital world. As educators, we must comprehend how to utilize this technology to improve our students' digital skills and ability to process information. During this session, we will explore the ways AI is changing digital literacy and how this affects our students.

Purpose & objective

As future-ready librarians, staying current on technology trends is essential. In this session, librarians will learn how AI is evolving our jobs and changing how information is consumed and created. In addition, attendees will discover ways to integrate AI into their library programs while developing strategies to use AI responsibly. Finally, this session will address ethical concerns that come with using AI.

Participant Outcomes:
In this session, participants will explore the benefits of incorporating AI into schools. They will acquire strategies for integrating AI into both the library and classroom. Attendees will leave with knowledge on how to improve search accuracy with AI, and personalize student learning experiences. The session will also cover how AI content creation can inspire creativity and imagination. The ultimate goal is for participants to gain an understanding on how AI is redefining literacy in the digital age.

Educational Challenges Addressed:
The technology of AI is rapidly advancing, which raises many questions and concerns for educators. It is difficult to fully comprehend the ethical and practical implications of utilizing it. Despite an uncertain future, educators must learn to harness this revolutionary tool to prepare for a rapidly evolving technology. Educators must learn to adapt to and harness the power of AI.

Technology Intervention:
During the presentation, we will provide resources on our favorite apps to integrate AI, such as ChatGPT, MagicSchoo.AI, Drifft, Curiopod, & Midjourney. We will model and walk participants through how to use Adobe Expresses Integration with Adobe Firefly to create more powerful graphics. Participants will then practice with Adobe's AI integration and create a logo representing them.

Models used:
Authentic Learning and Examples: Participants will evaluate real-world examples or AI versus human-created artifacts. The attendees must employ strategies to determine the difference between the two and learn ways to spot AI.
Partner Learning and Discussion: Participants will work together to discuss how they currently use AI and discuss the pros and cons of AI as a technology. They will discuss ethical considerations and bias that is inherent in AI.
Hands-on Learning: After learning how AI can be incorporated into content creation, participants will utilize Adobe Express and Firefly to create a logo representing themselves.

Outline

(5 minutes) Setting Norms - Discuss the need for an open and safe space as we discuss this evolving technology

(5 minutes) Content presentation on what AI is

(5 minutes) Is this AI or not AI- Participants will look at examples of AI and determine if it is human created or generated by AI and discuss the strategies the participants used to spot AI

(5 minutes) Partner Discussion - Participants will work together in small groups to discuss the ways they are currently using AI. They will also talk about the pros and cons of using AI

(15 minutes) - Content presentation on what it means to be creative in the time of AI- We will look at how we are empowering our learners to be critical thinkers and creators.

(10 minutes) - Interactive Activity- Participants will be shown how Adobe Express can be used to generate AI art. Then they will create their own logos using Adobe Express AI art and text.

(15 Minutes)- Content presentation - Information Bias and Copyright in the time of AI. We will discuss who owns work and how that information is generated in the time of AI. We will discuss the ethics of using AI.
