Session description

Learn how High Plains School K-8 STEAM uses Problem Based Learning units to engage students in solving real community problems. Learn our process and how students are change makers. From Kindergarteners advocating for safer routes to school to middle schoolers urging the community to take action on water conservation.

Purpose & objective

After visiting our booth on Problem Based Learning participants will walk away with the information they need to plan, teach and implement PBL in their classrooms. We will show how we start with content standards connected to a problem in our community, how we plan instruction that brings in field experiences, guest expert speakers and data collection to define the problem, how to use cooperative learning structures to iterate solution ideas, how to set up expert panel presentations, and how to bring solution ideas to action in the community. We will highlight how our Kindergarteners were able to connect learning Social Studies standards on personal safety and civics to solve the problem of unsafe route to school in our neighborhood. Kindergartners were invited to present to our City Council advocating for safer routes to school for walkers, riders and rollers. As a result our neighborhood will be receiving more crosswalks, school zone signs and more traffic studies the school district. In addition the Kindergartners raised $500 using our school Laser Cutting machine to design, create and sell Christmas ornaments. The city will be using the money for a grant on educating safe routes to school for students! We will also show how technology was imbedded in the instructional delivery, and student product.
