Tolulope (Tolu) Noah, Ed.D. is the Instructional Learning Spaces Coordinator at California State University, Long Beach, where she facilitates faculty development. Previously, she was a senior professional learning specialist at Apple, an associate professor in the undergraduate teacher education program at Azusa Pacific University (APU), and a K-12 teacher in Los Angeles. Tolu received the 2019 Teaching Excellence Faculty Award at APU & she was named by EdTech Magazine as one of the 30 Higher Ed IT Influencers to Follow in 2023. Session description

Creating accessible instructional materials (such as handouts and slides) is essential to fostering an inclusive environment that meets the needs of diverse learners. In this interactive session, you will learn about important digital accessibility practices that you can immediately implement in order to design more accessible materials.

Purpose & objective

The purpose of this session is to help educators who are new to the topic of digital accessibility learn about important practices for creating accessible instructional materials (such as handouts and slides).

The objectives are that attendees will be able to:
• Describe the importance of digital accessibility.
• Identify common accessibility mistakes that can create barriers for learners.
• Describe how to remedy those mistakes in order to create more accessible instructional materials.

Outline

The session will proceed as follows:

2 min.- I will briefly introduce myself and share the session agenda and outcomes.

3 min.- Attendees will complete warm up activities about digital accessibility.

2 min.- I will share a bit about my personal journey with digital accessibility.

40 min.- We will unpack five important digital accessibility concepts using the acronym, CHILL (which stands for Color, Headings, Images, Links, & Lists). For each topic, attendees will learn about important accessibility principles and practice applying them in a Google Doc.

3 min.- I will wrap up the session by providing additional resources that attendees can use to go further in their digital accessibility journey. Additionally, I will obtain feedback about the session and answer any remaining questions.
